You can throw the disc 100 meters, but strokes are really won near the basket. A good putt is what lowers your score the most, and it's the easiest thing to practice.
Always use the same putter
Pick one putter and always practice with it. A base plastic grips better and settles in the chains. If you like a model, have two or three identical ones to practice with. Models like the Luna or the Judge fly straight and are forgiving.
Stance
- Put the foot on your throwing-arm side forward, pointing at the basket, and the other one behind for balance.
- Bend your knees slightly and keep your weight evenly spread.
- Look at a specific spot on the chains, not at the basket in general.
Grip
Hold the disc with your thumb on top and your fingers under the rim, without squeezing. A soft grip gives you more control and makes the disc come out straight.
Motion
Bring the disc back at chest height, shift your weight to the front foot and release the disc with your arm extended toward the basket. Finish with your hand pointing at the spot you were looking at. The disc should come out flat and without tilting to either side.
Two styles: spin and push
- Spin putt: the disc spins a lot and the power comes from the wrist. Works well for long putts.
- Push putt: the disc spins little and is pushed out with your whole arm, on a higher, slower line. If you miss, it doesn't end up as far from the basket.
How to practice
- Start at 3 meters and don't move back until you make 10 in a row.
- Step back one meter at a time until you reach the 10 meters of circle 1.
- Also practice in the wind and from awkward positions, just like on the course.
