Getting started in disc golf is easy and cheap: with one or two discs you can already play a full course. The important thing is to choose those first discs well, because a disc that is too fast or too heavy will make your throws veer to the left and cost you confidence. Here are our recommendations.
1. Start with a putter and a midrange
Even though drivers may look like the most appealing discs, the best way to start is with a putter and a midrange. They are slow discs that fly straight with little effort, they teach you to throw with good technique and they'll serve you for life for approaches and putts.
Once you have those two under control, add a fairway driver of speed 6 to 8. Leave distance drivers of speed 10 or more for later: they need a lot of arm speed to fly well.
2. Look at the flight numbers
Look for discs with high glide (5 or more), negative turn (-1 or -2) and low fade (0 or 1). These discs forgive mistakes and fly straight even if you don't throw very hard. If you don't know what these numbers mean, read our guide to flight numbers.
3. Choose a light or medium weight
Discs weigh roughly between 150 and 180 grams. If you're just starting out, a disc of 165 to 172 grams is easier to throw and control. Heavier discs handle wind better, but they demand more strength.
4. Base or premium plastic
Base plastics are cheaper and have plenty of grip, perfect for putters. Premium plastics last much longer and keep their flight for years, ideal for midranges and drivers. On each product page in the store we explain what the plastic of that disc is like.
5. A pack is the easiest way to start
If you'd rather keep it simple, a starter pack with a putter, a midrange and a driver gives you everything you need for your first round. Take a look at the 3-disc starter pack or our Tres flames pack.
